Covanta Bristol and Local Partners Bring Urban Gardens to Bristol Community

BRISTOL, C.T. – Covanta Bristol, owner/operators of the Bristol Resource Recovery Facility, an Energy-from-Waste facility providing area municipalities with sustainable waste disposal, together with the Bristol Boys & Girls Club, Home Depot and Quantum Bio Power, are working to make the community a little greener by installing urban gardens at designated locations in town. The gardens were planted last month at D.J. Komanetsky Estates and Cambridge Park, two affordable housing developments operated by the Bristol Housing Authority.

“The urban garden initiative is an incredible program that focuses on not only beautifying our community, but gives residents the opportunity to enjoy fresh vegetables right from their backyards,” Mary Ruder, transfer station manager at Covanta said. “None of this would have been possible without the generous contributions from our partners. We greatly appreciate their participation and commitment to the Bristol community.”

In total, nine new garden beds were built and nine existing garden beds were refurbished. With donations of plants and seeds from Covanta Bristol, more than 100 varieties of fruits and vegetables were planted. Additionally, other donations included soil from Quantum Bio Power as well as gloves and tools from Home Depot. Approximately 65 volunteers, many from the Bristol Boys & Girls Club, helped with the new and existing garden beds.

Jay Maia, Cambridge Park Boys & Girls Club Unit Director said, “We are incredibly grateful to have Covanta’s support for our Community Garden at our Cambridge Park Boys & Girls Club. The gardens have taught our members responsibility and have highlighted the importance of taking care of our environment. Covanta’s commitment to protecting the planet with environmentally-sound waste management and renewable energy solutions in our community is extremely important for our younger members to learn about and appreciate! ”

The Bristol Resource Recovery Facility processes approximately 650 tons of municipal solid waste per day into 16 megawatts of clean, renewable electricity -- enough to power approximately 10,000 homes. Energy-from-Waste facilities like Covanta Bristol complement recycling efforts and reduce greenhouse gases by avoiding methane from landfills, offsetting greenhouse gases from fossil fuel electrical production and recycling metals.
