Retiring American Flags at Covanta Niagara

Covanta Niagara partnered with Monroe County in New York  to decommission 1.19 tons of retired U.S. flags in accordance with the United States Flag Code, Title 4, Section 8k. These flags completed their service by being converted into a renewable energy source for the local community.

Across the country, veterans' organizations have developed public collection programs for unserviceable U.S. flags but the sheer number of flags they receive can often be overwhelming. To help ease the burden of managing the volume of flags received, Covanta assists groups with retiring flags in the customary manner and in accordance with guidance from veterans' organizations.
