Blue Birds Living at Covanta Montgomery

June 26, 2023

Covanta Montgomery (Dickerson, MD) now has four nesting boxes for birds on the facility property. The facility ordered the boxes after receiving an inquiry from the Maryland Blue Bird Society, which maintains similar boxes on adjacent properties. Society members, working with Environmental Specialist Jennifer Lewis and facility Administrative Assistant Mary Robertson, installed the boxes recently, with hopes of enhancing the bluebird population in Montgomery County.

Within 10 days of installation of the boxes, birds had already established nests in all four. The facility will continue to work with the Society to monitor and maintain the boxes. The facility's property is also an ideal habitat for Monarch butterflies, who lay their eggs and feed on the milkweed around the railyard before migrating during the winter.
