Steve_Jones-2017Mr. Jones came to Covanta in January, 2015 following a lengthy tenure with Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. based in Allentown, PA, where he held a variety of senior-level management positions including in the company’s tonnage gases, equipment and energy businesses, as well as in the Industrial Chemicals Division, and culminating with his role as Air Products’ China president based at the company’s office in Shanghai.

Prior to joining Air Products in 1992, Mr. Jones practiced corporate law at Dechert LLP in Philadelphia, PA, primarily in the areas of mergers and acquisitions.

Mr. Jones earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in finance from Temple University and a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, he participated in the INSEAD Advanced Management Program in Fontainebleau, France.

Brad_H-2017Brad Helgeson was appointed executive vice president and chief financial officer of Covanta in November 2013.  Prior to becoming CFO, Mr. Helgeson had been Covanta’s vice president and treasurer since joining the company in May 2007.

From 2004 to 2007, Mr. Helgeson was vice president of finance and treasurer for Waste Services, Inc., a publicly-traded environmental services company with operations in the U.S. and Canada. Prior to his tenure at Waste Services, Mr. Helgeson worked for two investment banking firms, Lehman Brothers and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, where he assisted clients in raising capital and with merger and acquisition transactions in the industrial sector.

Mr. Helgeson graduated magna cum laude with an A.B. degree in economics and history from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME.

Derek_Veenhof-2017Derek Veenhof is executive vice president, asset management, leading the management and growth of the company’s North American business with an annual revenue of approximately $1.7 billion. This includes responsibility for public sector service agreements, residential and commercial merchant waste procurement, energy contracting and environmental services.

Mr. Veenhof joined Covanta in 1996 as a business manager. Since then, Mr. Veenhof has held a variety of positions with increasing responsibility throughout the organization. From 2007 until 2013, he served as a vice president and then senior vice president, overseeing a $0.5B merchant municipal and commercial waste contracting and supply portfolio, as well as scrap metals commodity marketing and related growth efforts. Mr. Veenhof was promoted to executive vice president in late 2013 and assumed his current duties in early 2015.

Prior to Covanta, Mr. Veenhof worked in the environmental sector as a project scientist and consultant and was a research associate with Ontario Agricultural College, part of the University of Guelph and Canada’s leading agricultural research college. He is a published lead author and co-author of several peer reviewed research papers on the topics of land use, environmental impacts and waste management.

Mr. Veenhof holds both undergraduate and graduate (with distinction) degrees in Environmental and Agricultural Sciences from the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada.

Michael J. de Castro joined Covanta as executive vice president, Supply Chain in July 2015. Mr. de Castro is responsible for the direction, strategy and execution of global supply chain and operations for Covanta.

Prior to joining Covanta, Mr. de Castro was chief executive officer of Interstate Waste Services (IWS) located in Basking Ridge, NJ. From 2006 to 2010, he worked for Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. located in Allentown, PA, serving in various operations capacities including director, Global Operations Americas.  In 2013, following his tenure at IWS, Mr. de Castro returned to Air Products, serving as director, Global Operations Strategic Development, and most recently, as fulfillment director in the Performance Materials division.

Previous to his tenures at IWS and Air Products, Mr. de Castro worked at American Ref-Fuel Company for 16 years where he held a variety of positions in operations, culminating with the role of vice president, Operations.

Mr. de Castro earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Alabama and a Master of Business Administration from Boston University.

Timothy J. Simpson was appointed executive vice president, general counsel and secretary in December 2007, having served as senior vice president, general counsel and secretary since 2004.

Since joining Covanta in 1992, Mr. Simpson has held many positions within the company’s legal group. From 2001 to 2004, he served as vice president, associate general counsel and assistant secretary of Covanta Energy and as senior vice president, associate general counsel and assistant secretary of Covanta Energy Group, Inc.

Mr. Simpson holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from St. Lawrence University located in Canton, NY. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN.

Matthew_Mulcahy-2017

Matthew Mulcahy was appointed executive vice president and Covanta’s head of corporate development in 2017.  In this role, Mr. Mulcahy has overall responsibility for the planning, development and execution of a wide range of business strategies and initiatives in accordance with Covanta’s global strategic corporate objectives. Mr. Mulcahy’s responsibilities range from identifying targets for potential corporate alliances, corporate acquisitions and/or divestitures, securing financial arrangements, as well as the development of greenfield projects.

Mr. Mulcahy joined Covanta in 1990 and has held numerous positions within the company, including oversight of domestic and international business development, responsibility for domestic and international M&A and management of the company’s merchant and industrial waste activities including leadership of the profiled waste group. 

Mr. Mulcahy has a long and distinguished track record in the development and implementation of renewable energy facilities in the United States, Canada and the Republic of Ireland and has been involved in almost every major acquisition undertaken by the firm since joining the company.

Mr. Mulcahy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Boston College and a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in finance from Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management in Nashville, TN.

Paul Stauder was appointed the president of Covanta Environmental Solutions in December, 2015. In this capacity, Mr. Stauder oversees the management and growth of this newly-formed subsidiary that provides companies with comprehensive environmental services through a vast, nationwide network of material processing and Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facilities.

Mr. Stauder joined Covanta in 1997 and served in a number of positions including regional vice president of the Mid-Atlantic region, regional vice president of operations for Covanta’s independent power provider plants, business manager for Covanta Fairfax and in corporate finance. Immediately prior to his current role with Covanta, Mr. Stauder served as senior vice president of business management with primary responsibility for all business aspects involving Covanta’s North American EfW facilities.

He has more than 25 years’ experience in waste and environmental services, construction and energy generation.

Mr. Stauder earned a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the University of Rhode Island and a Masters in Business from Pepperdine University.

Paul Gilman was appointed senior vice president and Covanta’s first chief sustainability officer in 2008. He is responsible for Covanta’s safety, health and environmental compliance programs and sustainability initiatives that seek to reduce Covanta’s environmental impact while increasing the use of its technologies.

Prior to joining Covanta, Dr. Gilman was the director of the Oak Ridge Center for Advanced Studies. From 2002 until 2004, he served as the assistant administrator for Research and Development and Science Advisor at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Prior to joining the EPA, Dr. Gilman was director for Policy Planning at Celera Genomics and was the executive director of the life sciences and agriculture divisions for the National Research Council of the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering.

In addition, Dr. Gilman has held several senior-level positions with the federal government including associate director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for Natural Resources, Energy, and Science, and was executive assistant to the Secretary of Energy for technical matters. He has 13 years of experience working on the staff of the United States Senate in various capacities, including as a Congressional Science Fellow sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Gilman received both Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. He earned his Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, also from Johns Hopkins University.

Ginny Angilello joined Covanta as senior vice president and chief human resources officer in April 2018. Ms. Angilello is responsible for all aspects of Covanta’s human resources organization, including talent acquisition and retention strategy, organizational culture initiatives, benefits and compensation, diversity and inclusion and employee engagement efforts.

Prior to joining Covanta, Ms. Angilello spent 17 years at Honeywell International, in roles of increasing responsibility, most recently as vice president, Human Resources for Performance Materials & Technologies (PMT), Integrated Supply Chain (ISC). In this position, she led global human resources in ISC for the PMT business unit comprised of approximately 10,000 employees at 90 operating sites. Her key areas of focus included manufacturing, procurement, supply planning, logistics and engineering. Prior to this position, Ms. Angilello was vice president, Global Operations for Honeywell’s HR services division; global director of Human Resources, Specialty Materials; and senior director of US and Canada HR Services Operations.

Ms. Angilello earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Connecticut and a Juris Doctor degree from New York Law School. She is also Six Sigma Green Belt certified.

Joseph Schantz

Joseph J. Schantz is vice president, chief accounting officer for Covanta, responsible for all controllership matters. He was appointed to the position in April 2020.

Mr. Schantz joined Covanta in 2017 as director of technical accounting. Later, he was promoted to senior director and assistant corporate controller.

Prior to joining Covanta, Mr. Schantz was a director, SEC/IPO services, at Pine Hill Group, a transaction and advisory firm in Philadelphia, PA. Previously, he held roles in technical accounting at Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., based in Allentown, PA, and in the audit function of Deloitte in Philadelphia, PA, and McLean, VA.  

Mr. Schantz graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA, and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Samuel_ZellSam Zell is a global, opportunistic, often contrarian, investor. He specializes in identifying market anomalies and emerging trends, and has a long track record in turning around troubled companies and assets, leading industry consolidations, and bringing companies to the public markets. The majority of his investment portfolio is in energy, logistics, transportation, manufacturing, communications and healthcare, but he is often best known for his pioneering role and stewardship in creating the modern commercial real estate industry.

Sam is the Chairman of Equity Group Investments, the private investment firm he founded 50 years ago. He also chairs five companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange: Equity Residential, an apartment REIT; Equity LifeStyle Properties, a manufactured home community and resort REIT; Equity Commonwealth, an office REIT; Covanta Holding Corporation, an international owner/operator of energy-from-waste and power generation facilities; and Anixter International Inc., a leading global provider of communications, security, and wire and cable products.

Sam also founded and chaired Equity Office Properties Trust, the largest office REIT until its 2007 sale for $39 billion in the largest leveraged buyout at the time. In addition, he introduced the first Brazilian and Mexican real estate companies, respectively, to the New York Stock Exchange through Equity International, a second private investment firm he founded to focus on real estate-related businesses in emerging markets.

Sam is an active philanthropist with a focus on entrepreneurial education. Through the Zell Family Foundation, he has led the sponsorship of several leading entrepreneurship programs, including: the Zell/Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies at University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business; the Zell Fellows Program at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management; and the Zell Entrepreneurship Center at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya (IDC). The Zell Global Entrepreneur Network (ZGEN) unites the students and alumni of these programs and actively provides them with connections, opportunities, mentorship and support. Sam also sponsors the Samuel Zell/Robert Lurie Real Estate Center at University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Real Estate Center. He holds a JD degree and a BA from the University of Michigan.

David_BarseMr. David M. Barse has served on the board of directors of Covanta Holding Corporation since 1996 and is the chairperson of the Finance Committee and is a member of the Audit Committee. He previously served as president and chief executive officer from July 1996 until July 24, 2002 of Danielson Holding Corporation, Covanta’s predecessor. 

David Barse is the Founder and Chief Investment Officer of DMB Holdings, LLC, a private family office with a diverse investment portfolio. Until 2015, Mr. Barse was chief executive officer of Third Avenue Management, an investment adviser to private and institutional clients. Under his leadership, Third Avenue grew its assets and broadened its product offerings to include mutual funds, separate accounts, subadvised portfolios and private partnerships, without sacrificing its disciplined value investing strategy. 

Mr. Barse has been frequently involved in larger strategic and special situation investments, including actively participating in Third Avenue’s investment in Danielson Holding Corporation, as both an officer and director. In addition to serving as director of Covanta, Mr. Barse has the honor of serving as a trustee of Brooklyn Law School and as a director of the City Parks Foundation.

Ronald_BroglioRonald J. Broglio has been a director since October 2004 and is a member of the Compensation and Supply Chain & Construction Committees. Mr. Broglio has been the President of RJB Associates, a consulting firm specializing in energy and environmental solutions, since 1996. Mr. Broglio was Managing Director of Waste to Energy for Waste Management International Ltd. from 1991 to 1996.

Prior to joining Waste Management, Mr. Broglio held a number of positions with Wheelabrator Environmental Systems Inc. from 1980 through 1990, including Managing Director, Senior Vice President - Engineering, Construction & Operations and Vice President of Engineering & Construction. Mr. Broglio served as Manager of Staff Engineering and as a staff engineer for Rust Engineering Company from 1970 through 1980.

Peter_BynoeMr. Peter C.B. Bynoe has served on the board of directors for Covanta Holding Corporation since July 2004. He is a member of the Compensation and Nominating & Governance Committees.

Since October 2014, Mr. Bynoe has been a managing director at Equity Group Investments. From September 2013 to October 2014, Mr. Bynoe served as the chief executive officer of Rewards Network, Inc., a provider of credit card loyalty and rewards programs. For five years prior to Rewards Network, Mr. Bynoe was a partner and chief operating officer of Loop Capital LLC, a full-service investment banking firm based in Chicago. Mr. Bynoe has been affiliated with DLA Piper US LLP, an international law firm, since March 1995, and served as senior counsel to the firm from January 2009 to December 2016.

Prior to joining DLA Piper US LLP, Mr. Bynoe managed Telemat Ltd., a business consulting firm he founded in 1982. Mr. Bynoe commits a significant amount of his time to corporate, civic and charitable boards. He has served as a director for Jacor Communications, J&G Industries, Huffman-Koos, Inc., the River Valley Savings Bank, Blue Chip Broadcasting and Uniroyal Technology Corporation. He is currently a director for Frontier Communications and Signature Holding Corporation. 

Linda_FisherMs. Linda J. Fisher was elected as a board director of Covanta Holding Corporation in December 2007 and is a member of the Audit and Supply Chain & Construction Committees.

Ms. Fisher formerly served as vice president and chief sustainability officer for E.I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company in Wilmington, Delaware. Prior to joining DuPont, Ms. Fisher served in a number of key leadership positions in government and industry including: Deputy Administrator of EPA; EPA Assistant Administrator – Office of Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances; EPA Assistant Administrator – Office of Policy, Planning and Evaluation; and Chief of Staff to the EPA Administrator. Ms. Fisher, an attorney, was also vice president of Government Affairs for Monsanto and was “Of Counsel” with the law firm, Latham & Watkins.

Joseph_HolstenJoseph M. Holsten was elected a board director of Covanta Holding Corporation in May 2009.  Mr. Holsten serves as chairperson of the Supply Chain & Construction Committee and is a member of the Finance Committee.

Mr. Holsten has been Chairman of the Board of LKQ Corporation (“LKQ”), the leading provider of recycled and aftermarket parts in the U.S., since November 2011. Prior to this he was Chief Executive Officer since 1998.  Mr. Holsten also serves on the board of directors of LKQ. Prior to joining LKQ, Mr. Holsten held various positions of increasing responsibility with the North American and International operations of Waste Management, Inc. for approximately 17 years. From February 1997 until July 1998, Mr. Holsten served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Waste Management, Inc. From July 1995 until February 1997, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Waste Management International, plc. Prior to working for Waste Management, Inc., Mr. Holsten was a staff auditor at a public accounting firm.

Owen Michaelson was appointed a board director of Covanta Holding Corporation in September 2018. He is a member of the Finance and Supply Chain & Construction Committees.

Mr. Michaelson is Chief Executive of the Harworth Group PLC, one of the largest land and property regeneration companies in the United Kingdom. He has more than 25 years of experience in the United Kingdom in land development, energy generation and waste management, having held executive roles at the Peel Group, Black Country Properties and Viridor.

Prior to his current role, he was Managing Director – Property for UK Coal PLC, the predecessor company to Harworth Group PLC. He successfully managed the demerger of Harworth Estates from UK Coal in 2012 to create a free standing property business specializing in the remediation and development of former colliery sites and other brownfield land. Harworth Group PLC is a listed company on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange.

Danielle Pletka has been a director since September 2016 and serves on the Compensation and Nominating & Governance Committees.

Ms. Pletka, an expert in international affairs and national security matters, is senior vice president of foreign and defense policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a leading public policy research organization. Prior to joining AEI, she served as a longtime senior staff member for the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, where she specialized in the Near East and South Asia.

Ms. Pletka is an accomplished editor and author, and a frequent guest on nationally-syndicated political television programs. She has an M.A. from the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University and a B.A. from Smith College.

Michael W. Ranger has been a director since September 2016. Mr. Ranger serves as chairperson of the Audit Committee and is a member of the Finance Committee.

Mr. Ranger is co-founder and senior managing director of Diamond Castle Holdings, LLC, a private equity investment firm focusing on energy and power, healthcare, financial services and other diversified industries. Before founding Diamond Castle Holdings in 2004, he was co-chairman of DLJ Global Energy Partners. Previously, he was an investment banker in the energy and power sector for 20 years, most recently as head of the Domestic Power Group at Credit-Suisse First Boston and prior to that as group head of Global Energy & Power at DLJ. Before joining DLJ, he was a senior vice president in the Energy & Utility Group at Drexel Burnham Lambert and was a member of the Utility Banking Group at Bankers Trust.

Mr. Ranger is a former member of the board of directors of TXU Corp. (Dallas) and American Ref-Fuel, Inc, Catamount Energy Corporation and is on the board of directors at Consolidated Edison, Inc. (New York City), Bonton Media Group (New York), Beacon Behavioral Health (Boston) and KDC Solar, Inc. (NJ). He is a trustee emeritus of St. Lawrence University and, chairman of the board, of The Seeing Eye, Inc. and a member of the board of Morristown-Beard School. He holds a B.A. from St. Lawrence University.

Mr. Silberman has been a member of Covanta's Board of Directors since December 2004 and is chairperson of the Nominating & Governance Committee. He was named Lead Director in May 2019. Mr. Silberman is currently executive chairman of the board of directors of Strategic Education, Inc.. He previously served as chief executive officer of that company from 2001 to 2013 and has been a director since 2001.

From 1995 to 2000, Mr. Silberman served in a variety of senior management positions at CalEnergy Company, Inc., including as president and chief operating officer.  From 1993 to 1995, Mr. Silberman was Assistant to the chairman and chief executive officer of International Paper Company.  From 1989 to 1993, Mr. Silberman served in several senior positions in the U.S. Department of Defense, including as assistant secretary of the Army.

He also serves on the Board of Visitors of The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.  Mr. Silberman holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Dartmouth College and a master’s degree in international policy from The Johns Hopkins University.

Ms. Jean Smith has been a director since December 2003 and serves as chairperson of the Compensation Committee and is a member of the Audit Committee.

Ms. Smith is the CEO of West Knoll Collection, LLC, a home furnishings company.  From 2009 to 2013 she was a Managing Director of Gordian Group, LLC. Prior to joining Gordian Group, Ms. Smith was Managing Director in Direct Investing at Plainfield Asset Management from 2006 to 2008. From 2004 to 2006 she was the President of Sure Fit Inc., a home textiles company that was owned at the time by D.E. Shaw Laminar Portfolios. She was a consultant on various special situation financing projects from 2001 to 2004. Ms. Smith has approximately 25 years of investment and international banking experience, having held positions with Banker Trust Company, Citicorp Investment Bank, Security Pacific Merchant Bank, UBS Securities and U.S. Bancorp Libra.
