Working to keep mercury out of the environment
September 25, 2020
On Saturday, September 12, Onondaga County residents showed support for the health of the environment and of our community by participation in a special mercury thermometer and thermostat recycling event that was sponsored by the Onondaga Resource Recovery Agency and Covanta Onondaga.
By turning in old thermometers and thermostats for proper disposal at this event, more than 134 grams of mercury were kept out of the environment. This is comparable to recycling 33,500 compact fluorescent light bulbs.
Residents received a $10 Lowe’s gift card for their effort, courtesy of Covanta. Those bringing in a thermometer also received a new digital thermometer from Covanta.
