Environmental Overview - Wisely Managing Resources and Environmental Impacts

We offer renewable energy and environmentally-sound waste disposal solu
tions that:

  • reduce greenhouse gases and combat climate change
  • reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills to preserve open space
  • protect the environment by employing state-of-the-art technology and systems
  • maximize recycling and the reuse of resources (metal, water and ash)

Energy-from-Waste (EfW) is the most responsible alternative to landfill disposal.  It reduces the volume of waste to be disposed of in a sustainable manner while generating valuable renewable energy resulting in a net reduction of greenhouse gas emissions when compared to conventional landfill practices.

We process approximately 21 million tons of municipal solid waste each year which conserves over 25 million cubic yards of landfill space and generates 9 million megawatt hours of electricity - enough clean, renewable energy to power for more than one million homes. All of our EfW projects feature state-of-the-art emission control technology.

We believe that environmental awareness and performance is the responsibility of every employee. By embracing a philosophy of protection, compliance, conservation, qualification, and commitment -- we can all make a difference.

To ensure all communities have a fair and just opportunity to participate in the decision-making process in matters impacting local environments, we maintain a community outreach and environmental justice policy to support our commitment to engage fully with local communities, to reduce discharges and minimize emissions and to do this in a manner which ensures meaningful community involvement.

Covanta EfW facilities recycle over 600,000 tons of ferrous metal and non-ferrous metal annually – the equivalent amount of steel that would be used to build nearly six Golden Gate Bridges and in the production of over three billion aluminum beverage cans.
