Covanta Kent

The Kent County EfW Facility, operating as Covanta Kent, Inc., began commercial operation in January 1990. The 9.86-acre facility in Grand Rapids, MI, processes 625 tons-per-day of municipal solid waste, generating up to 18 megawatts of electricity. Under Covanta's operating contract, the company is responsible for maintaining the facility. Waste is delivered to the facility from Grand Rapids and 5 surrounding cities.

Air Pollution Control Equipment:

Semi-dry flue gas scrubbers injecting lime, fabric filter baghouses, nitrogen oxide control system, mercury control system, and continuous emissions monitoring (CEM) system

Energy-from-Waste System:

Two 312.5-ton-per-day waterwall furnaces with Martin® reverse-reciprocating grates and ash handling system

Energy Generation:

Up to 18 megawatts from one condensing steam turbine generator with a controlled extraction capable of receiving 164,000 pounds per hour of steam.
