The Huntsville Solid Waste-to-Energy Facility, operating as Covanta Huntsville, Inc., is located on 20.5 acres adjacent to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL. Covanta Huntsville began commercial operation in July 1990. The facility processes 690 tons per day of solid waste and sewage sludge from the Huntsville wastewater treatment plant. Covanta Huntsville produces nearly 180,000 pounds of steam per hour, which travels through a six-mile long export line for the arsenal's heating and air conditioning needs. The facility is equipped with four fossil-fuel package boilers, which allow steam to be available 100% of the time.

Waste Processing Capacity:

690 tons per day

Air Pollution Control Equipment:

Semi-dry flue gas scrubbers injecting lime, fabric filter baghouses, nitrogen oxide control system, mercury control system, and continuous emissions monitoring (CEM) system

Energy-from-Waste System:

Two 365 ton-per-day waterwall furnaces with Martin® reverse-reciprocating grates and ash handling system

Energy Generation:

89,310 lbs. of steam per hour each refuse unit; 100,000 lbs. per hour from each of four oil and gas fired package boilers; total of 400,000 lbs. per hour rated capacity of steam transmission line

Awards and Recognition:

  • Designated a Voluntary Protection Program Star facility by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for workplace safety
  • Beautification Award since 1990

Covanta Huntsville has been a premier partner with the City of Huntsville’s Operation Green Team. Operation Green Team endeavors to make Huntsville a role model for the state, region and nation in terms of landscape beauty, cleanliness, and environmental consciousness. Through this affiliation, we are able to educate youth on how to manage waste intelligently and responsibly.
