The Huntington Resource Recovery Facility began commercial operation in December 1991, serving the towns of Huntington and Smithtown. Operating as Covanta Huntington, this 13-acre facility in East Northport processes 750 tons per day of solid waste, generating up to 25 megawatts of renewable energy. Covanta Huntington is the cornerstone of an integrated solid waste management system for these communities, where landfill waste disposal is prohibited by state law.

Air Pollution Control Equipment:

Semi-dry flue gas scrubbers injecting lime, fabric filter baghouses, nitrogen oxide control system, mercury control system, and continuous emissions monitoring (CEM) system

Energy-from-Waste System:

Three 250 ton-per-day waterwall furnaces with Martin® reverse reciprocating grates and ash handling system

Energy Generation:

Up to 25 megawatts from one condensing steam turbine generator

Awards and Recognition:

Designated a Voluntary Protection Program Star facility by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for workplace safety
