Covanta Babylon

The Babylon Resource Recovery Facility, operating as Covanta Babylon, Inc., began commercial operation in April 1989 and serves the Town of Babylon, NY. Located on almost 10 acres adjacent to the town's landfill in West Babylon, Covanta operates the facility under an operating and maintenance contract with the Town of Babylon.  The facility processes 750 tons per day of solid waste and generates up to 17 megawatts of renewable energy. With a landfill moratorium on Long Island, the facility provides an environmentally safe way to dispose of waste. This facility also operates with a "zero discharge" of process water, which means that all wastewater generated on-site is treated and reused. Covanta Babylon also operates a water treatment plant which processes leachate water from under the old town landfill to be used in the Energy-from-Waste process.

Commercial Operation:

April 1989

Waste Processing Capacity:

750 tons per day

Air Pollution Control Equipment:

Semi-dry flue gas scrubbers injecting lime, fabric filter baghouses, nitrogen oxide control system, mercury control system, and continuous emissions monitoring system

Energy-from-Waste System:

Two, 375 ton-per-day water wall furnaces with MartinĀ® reverse-reciprocating grates and ash handling system

Energy Generation:

Up to 17 megawatts from one condensing steam turbine generator

Awards and Recognition:

Covanta Babylon uses an advanced water purification process in which leachate (runoff) from an adjacent landfill, originally used by the Town of Babylon, is treated and utilized in facility operations. It was the first EfW facility in the United States to perform this function. In addition, it was the first zero-water discharge EfW facility in the U.S., meaning that all wastewater from facility operations is treated onsite and recycled through the system.
