The Alexandria/Arlington Waste To Energy Facility began commercial operation in February 1988 and serves about 300,000 residents of the County of Arlington and the City of Alexandria, which jointly own the site. The facility's three, 325 ton-per-day furnaces process 975 tons of solid waste, generating up to 23 megawatts of renewable energy. The facility is located on the smallest site of any of the Energy-from-Waste facilities operated by Covanta.
