Samuel Zell

Mr. Samuel Zell was elected chairman of Covanta’s board of directors in September 2005. From 1999 to 2004, he served as a director, and from July 2002 to October 2004, he served as president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board.

Mr. Zell’s investments span industries and continents, and include interests in energy, logistics, transportation, communications, and real estate. These investments are managed by Equity Group Investments LLC (EGI), the private entrepreneurial investment firm Mr. Zell founded more than 45 years ago. EGI is recognized as the genesis of three of the largest real estate investment trusts (REITs) in history. He is also co-founder and chairman of Equity International, a private investment company focused on real estate-related businesses outside the U.S.

In addition to Covanta, Mr. Zell maintains substantial interests in, and is the chairman of four other public companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange: Equity Residential (EQR), the largest apartment real estate investment trust (REIT) in the U.S.; Equity LifeStyle Properties (ELS), a manufactured home community REIT; Equity Commonwealth (EQC), one of the largest commercial office REITs in the U.S.; and Anixter International, Inc., (AXE), a leading global provider of communications, security and wire and cable products. Previously, Mr. Zell served as chairman for Equity Office Properties Trust, which was sold in 2007 to The Blackstone Group for $39 billion in one of the largest private equity transactions in history.
